About Department of Zoology
Establishment of the Department with brief History
K. L. E. Society’s P. C. Jabin Science College is the single faculty Science college, started in the year 1957 to impart need based and moral education to the students of north Karnataka. In the beginning Zoology subject was co-existing along with the Botany subject and both were combinedly functioning under the Department of Biology. In the year 1971 Department of Zoology was bifurcated and started functioning independently. Prof. C. J. Savanurmath was the founder Head of the Department and successfully led the Department till 1979. During his tenure, the Department saw a phenomenal academic development and a well set museum was established.

SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Zoology feels proud in possessing the rare precious Zoological treasure, a mounted life size elephant Skelton, in its museum. It is the first of its kind in Karnataka state and fourth in the Country. There are only three other such pieces in the National Museums of Chennai, Kolkatta and Trevendrum.
Dr. C.J.Savanurmath, Retd, Professor of Sericulture, Karnataka University Dharwad and Founder Head of the Department and his associates, did this herculian task of articulating and mounting the mammoth Skeleton.
“Ganesh”, an elephant in the service of Moorusavira math, a leading veerashaiva Math of the state, was electrocuted in the year 1971 and was buried in black cotton soil of Bidnal, a nearby village. Ten months, after the event the idea of recovering the skeleton, took shape in the mind if Prof. C.J. Savanurmath, then Head of Zoology of our college. After obtaining permission from the swami ji , the body of the elephant was exhumed and it took more than 3 years hard sustained labour, native ingenuity and tenacity to articulate the bones and mount them in a proper shape. Mounting, the full 300kg weight of the skeleton on a platform was a challenging task. But, Dr. Savanurmath and his team, designed special steel fabrication, involving engineering skill and erected the entire huge skeleton in its original shape, which was installed in 1974. It is hearing to see that the work has survived for more than 30 years, without incurring slightest disturbance of damage.
